In Memoriam, an exhibition honouring 5 artists no longer with us, including Avis, opened last night at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts in Wellington.
The exhibition has been curated by James Harcourt and is shown alongside another exhibition, The Art Pack. Both exhibitions run till April 23rd 2017.
Avis's legacy continues and there is strong demand for her work.
Her cards and her rug designs from Dilana Rugs are popular.
Douglas Lloyd Jenkins has just completed his latest book, "Beach Life, a celebration of Kiwi Beach Culture". Two of Avis' 1940s textile works of beach scenes feature in the book, reflecting her importance as the creator of the first surfing and beach-culture fabric designs.
Avis Higgs, 21 September 1918 - 14 October 2016
Avis passed away shortly after her 98th birthday. She had led a full and interesting life and has left behind a great legacy in her textile designs, paintings and drawings.
